We are pleased to share that Demographic Anxiety in Turkey, the new book by our faculty member Assoc. Prof. Serhun Al, co-authored with Assist. Prof. Sefa Secen, has been published by Edinburgh University Press.
The book explores demographic anxiety as a global phenomenon, examining how concerns over migration, fertility, population decline, and displacement shape politics, identities, and ideas of belonging across different societies. Drawing on a rich comparative perspective, the book analyzes how these anxieties contribute to cultural polarization, right-wing nationalism, and populism.
Focusing on Turkey, which has experienced unprecedented migration dynamics over the past decade, the book offers the first systematic and comprehensive analysis of how demographic anxiety emerges, how it is politically mobilized, and how it is reshaping electoral politics, nationalism, and the dynamics of right-wing populism.
