PhD courses are offered in four core fields: Comparative Politics, International Relations, Political Theory, and Turkish Politics. Courses taken must include at least one in each of these core fields.
Each student must demonstrate competence in two core fields by passing the qualifying examination in the core fields. Qualifying examination is offered twice a year, in May and in December, and it is based on reading lists that can be found on the department’s website. Each list is compiled by our expert faculty in the core fields and should be seen as an introductory framework, rather than an exhaustive guide, for preparation for the qualifying examination. Each student is required to pass a general oral examination in addition to the written examination in the fields. Written and oral examinations are usually offered in the same week.
Seminar & PhD Colloquium
All students are required to enrol in PSIR 695 Seminar offered by our expert faculty in the core fields. Seminars are graded on a Satisfactory/Unsatisfactory basis. All students are required to present their research papers at the PhD Colloquium organized by the Graduate Coordinator at the end of the term.
