Course Objectives To examine the rises and falls of the major powers of the international relations through a cyclical system.
Learning Outcomes The students who succeeded in this course;
  • Students who successfully complete the course will be able; to identify the origins and reasons of the military and political rise of the Ottoman state as well as the early Ottoman successes to finance its expensive armed conflicts and conquests
  • to examine the military and political rise of the Ottomans above the European monarchies in the 14th and 15th centuries and the relative weakness of Europe at the birth of the Ottoman state
  • to critique the geostrategy of the Ottoman Empire in the Basin of the Five Seas
  • to discuss the financial, military, economic, social and diplomatic structures of the Sublime Porte as well as the evolution of the Ottoman armed forces throughout its history
  • to emphasize the internal and external weaknesses of the Ottoman Empire vis-à-vis the “Great Powers” of Austria, Russia, Britain, France and Prussia.
