Faculty member of the IUE Political Science and International Relations, Dr. Umut Can Adısönmez attended a workshop organized by the Crisis Response Council and the Middle East Peace and Security (MEPS) Forum at the American University at Duhok, Iraq: “In the Shadow of Geopolitics: Conflict Resolution & Human Security in the Middle East.”
The workshop focused on urgent challenges across the Middle East, such as gender-based violence, the reintegration of ex-combatants, and the collective trauma endured by war-affected populations. Participants engaged with new, context-specific approaches to addressing these issues, asking how states, civil society, and international actors can move beyond conventional responses and begin to address the human consequences of war in more meaningful and durable ways.
