Course Objectives The aim of this course is to familiarize the student with the historical background, structure, actors, ideology and dynamics of Turkish politics.
Learning Outcomes The students who succeeded in this course;
  • to explain the continuities between the later period of the Ottoman Empire and the early Republican period
  • to explain the secularization reforms, efforts to build national identity, and economy politics of the single party period, and discusses the single party period as a form of government
  • to evaluate the transition to the multi-party period and the political, social, and economic transformations that took place during the Democratic Party period
  • to compare the causes and consequences of the 1960 military intervention with the 1980 military intervention
  • to compare the constitution making process and articles of 1961 Constitution with the 1982 Constitution
  • to make independent and creative scholarly research
  • to develop academic writing skills.
Course Description Topics to be covered include the historical background, the early republican period, the single-party rule, transition to the multi-party period and the Democratic Party rule, the 1960 military intervention and the political context of the 1960s and 1970s.
